| | Devil's Arcade - Bruce Springsteen | ] | Logan closed the door behind him, a stack of books tucked under his arm. He set them down on the kitchen counter, and then began walking swiftly to his bedroom. He'd done some quick research at the library on the name Anne had given him; Cratos. And oh, my. It did explain a lot.
He crouched, and reached underneath his bed. He pulled out a long, metal box, having decided to take inventory. He dashed about his room, taking weapons from all kinds of places; under the bed, behind the wardrobe, under a loose floorboard, behind the toilet....
His choice of sniper rifle, a Remington 700P. A beretta, a glock, a couple of hunting knives. A shotgun, for close encounters. A uzi that he'd never ever used but was more of a comfort blanket. He'd managed to get his weapons to Athens by arranging for them to be sent a day after he'd arrived, smuggled over in a boat.
Logan zipped his case open, and flicked through his CDs. Picking one, he placed it in his music player and hit play with the remote. As the slow, gentle melody clashed perfectly with the harsh, vague, poetic imagery of Devil's Arcade, Logan took a seat. He opened his journal. He clicked his pen several times until it felt just right, and then he began to write.
I researched the name 'Cratos'. A personification of strength and power...it makes sense. Perfect sense, now that I think about it. It simply clicks. Something is coming, I think. Rhea knows it, and we all know it. Something big, something powerful. And there will be sides. There are always sides. Always. It's the nature of humanity and everything in-between to defend strongly against the most remote danger of living in harmony.
Heroes are needed, so heroes will be made. |

| | Don't Stop Believing - Journey | ] | Logan Elliot Saint examined the journal lying on the desk before him. His name was there, quite clearly. That in itself should have been cause for panic. No one knew that a man with that name was in Athens. His employer didn’t even know his real name. And yet, there it was.
He was cautious, at first. Caution was one of many careful commandments in his line of work, and so he read. And he read. And he read. For his first three days, he just read every word repeatedly. He came to the conclusion that this was the real deal. Why not?
He wasn’t superstitious, nor was he religious despite having Christian parents. But the word of this Rhea, it held such…meaning, it simply clicked with him. Like a perfect piece of a puzzle, sliding into place with precision and a strange grace.
Logan still had to focus on his work, however.
Six targets.
Six weeks.
It was important to do things in sixes, just for now. Although maybe this time he wouldn’t adhere to that rule. Maybe he’d surprise himself.
He lifted the slightly worn cover, picking up the pen that lay next to his medication.
A very good day to you all. It is my absolute pleasure to converse with those of you who choose to talk back. From what I’ve seen, it would involve a great deal of you. I see many interesting opinions from many interesting people. Some a little more aggressive than others, but we're a diverse species, aren't we?
I choose to believe in this, to consider it real until proven otherwise. We are all very special people. Can’t you feel it? Can’t you sense it? The ceaseless dreams? The feeling? Oh, it’s all coming together for me. And for the rest of you. Oh, I cannot wait to meet the rest of you! It’s all very exciting. I must apologise, I’ve asked far too many questions while revealing nothing about myself. My name is Kevin, and I am in Athens like the rest of you.
For those who don’t believe, consider the times we are living in. This fearful, dark time we’re trapped in. The world is split into evil and into mediocrity. I choose to believe it’s time for something rather extraordinary to happen.
Don’t you? |
